Recovery Diary 2
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2014
06/01/2014
Bit behind at writing my blog so I will talk about the past 2 1/2 weeks since I got my 2nd cast off, I now have a air cast on with I have to wear all the time, I can take it off to shower and get changed.
The air boot has 3 sections to it which I have to pump up according to how tight I need the boot on my ankle to support it.
I celebrated NEW YEARS EVE in Barcelona this year with my Boyfriend and 13 other friends, was such a great trip , such a lovely place! I think I probably beat the 'world records' of walking the furthest in a air cast. I have very little pain if my foot is in my air cast or if keep my foot very still .Swelling and puffiness can still be seen as well as redness around the scar.Im using bio oil on my scar at least once aday.Of course it hurts , but I have been so surprised that it hasn't been more painful.
I have to start moving my ankle to get everything moving again , flexing and pointing and moving my ankle to the right.
I have this air cast on for 3 weeks and then I start physio (got a session booked next Tuesday 14th January)
I had a call today from Teressa Kerr, my head teacher at Bodyworks, she wants me back at college ASAP , they will sort a customised timetable out for me (singing, acting, non weight bearing pilates)
I have no pain when all my weight is on my foot, no pain when my foot is still.
Ankle feels really twingy and stiff, I have progressed well with flexing and pointing my foot, I am getting more movement in my ankle.I have also ditched the boot when sleeping!
10th January 2014
Back to the hospital to see Dr Deol
Went and saw Dr deol this morning at the hospital , he got me to take my shoes/boot and socks off to see how I am walking without the boot, got me to rise on 2 feet and 1 foot holding onto the wall, moving my ankle up and down to the side. He's very happy with my progress!
I am to keep the air boot on when going outside for the next 2 weeks, and gradually ween myself off it. I can take the boot of when I am at home which Im happy about. Got my first physio with Anj on Tuesday in St Albans. Seeing Dr deol in 6 weeks when I should be 'ready to rumble' in his own words!
14 January 2014 (8 weeks today since my operation)
Had a good few days , haven't been wearing my boot at all when I am indoors at home, only when going out. Went out for a meal the other day and didn't wear my boot, wore both timberlands for the first time, was okay , but was very uncomfortable. When taking the boot off it was surprisingly really painful , I because my foot was being pulled a little in a way it hadn't been pulled before.
Today I had my 1st physio appointment I was very nervous, as when I normally go I always have accupunture and the thought of having accupunture in my ankle freaked me out a little! We sorted out a rehab programme for me for the next few weeks, goals I need to complete.
-2 pool work sessions
(No swimming as its actually the WORST activity I can do for my foot at this stage) but exercises in the pool such as rising and lowering, holding onto the side. swishing my foot through the water forward and back gently. stepping up and down on the steps in the pool. steps side to side.
-2 gym work sessions
wall plank (when able, lift heels and toes)
-cross trainer (start doing 5 minutes and add a few minutes everytime)
I have to think about my hips (when I wore my air boot , my airboot raised my hip so I have been walking and still walking a little uneven which has clearly affected my hips) so I have to think about keeping my hips straight.
-Try cycling (Physio said I might not be able to do this as of yet but give it a go)
- 4 core mat exercises
-abs, leg raises,ball
-4 lots of personal exercises
sitting down to standing (NO HANDS)
wall sits
stepping up and down stairs
and REDUCE wearing my AIRCAST eeekkkk!!
My physio massaged my ankle/foot/leg today
stretched my legs
Manipulated/stretched my foot
I am writing this at 10.45 and my ankle is very sore, but this is normal. The colour of my skin has changed a little its red but very cold.
1st day back to college since my operation , and the day after my 1st physio session!
I was in a lot of pain this morning with my foot, walking around was painful , the pad of my foot was sensitive and sore. I couldnt walk as much as I normally could today. 1st day back at college , was great to see everyone, was so nervous! I was defiantly thrown in the deep end (considering Im not a singer .... lets be honest) Iv joined the musical theatre course until I can dance....
21/01/2014 Tuesday January 2014
So this time last week I was on my way to Cambridge, so been here a week now. Since last week I have been to the pool a few times aswell as the gym , I haven't tried the bike yet as every time I have been to the gym its been taken. I was advised by my physio to start on the cross trainer for about 2-5 minutes, I was in no pain what so ever so I went on for just over 8minutes, and then the only reason I stopped was I was going to be late for my next class.
I have been to the pool in Cambridge too , I was happily doing my exercises in the pool when 4 guys came up to me laughing and smiling I later found out they were actually the lifeguards there! 'You do know your supposed to swim when you go swimming' I obviously explained I had an operation and this is part of my physio work. I continued to swish my foot back and forth against the water , rising and doing small pliets.
Today I watched a jazz class, I couldn't help but cry throughout the first 20min of the lesson , similar feeling to when I watched the Bodywork Christmas show. Felt like it was a kick in the teeth , I'm not going to be able to do this jazz class tomorrow, next week , or even a month so was hard to watch it when I can see such an improvement from the 4-5 weeks I have missed at college already .
I know ill get there eventually........... I can tell walking up and down the stairs is getting easier but still one of the hardest things to do. I have been concentrating on pliets this week and can already see a slight improvement. I have also been using my theraband which I carry everywhere with me!
27/01/2014
Had my 2nd physio appointment the other day , was more painful than the last one. Especially hurt when she was pushing down on the front of my foot (forcing my point) and when she started inversion. Feels horribly twingy. My physio said it feels better than last week . This week I have to stretch my calfs out lots and lots because she thinks there causing problems. Cant believe how much I have suddenly progressed, feels like yesterday I still had a cast on , and know im going to the gym , walking without my boot on and going swimming.
I no I have a long way to go till im dancing, which does scare me. But everyday is getting better and that's the most important thing. Photos below are off my foot been strapped up at physio , my first dog walk with my boyfriend since operation, and a picture showing my leg which has been operated on with no muscle....
Just over 11 WEEKS SINCE MY OPERATION
05/02/12
I CYCLED FOR THE FIRST TIME TODAY !
I have been cycling in the gym so thought I would give it a go on the bike, I am also fed up of waiting for late and broken down buses .
-Slight pain when I push off with my right foot
-Slight pain when breaking on bike and I put my right foot out to balance
but very manageable just extra careful and also going granny pace!
I have DITCHED the air cast completely, I am walking normally in normal shoes.
Pain wise: I get pain when I have been sat down for a short/long period , very stiff and I limp but eases out quickly.
Pain in morning when I wake up.
Pain when walking in my achillies and in my arch of my foot.
I am trying a little inversion on my foot now , the pain is a BURNING sensation that's the best way I can describe it.
27th Febuary 2014
Today mum treated me to a lovely spa day in Cambridge , we had a lovely Champagne afternoon tea and we got to use all the spa facilities so today I RAN FOR THE FIRST TIME! (on the treadmill) I ran for 5 minutes before my calves and achillies felt like they were about to SNAP!
March 7th Friday
Today in physio Anj got out the needles!! I was sweating like crazy. I have put up a photo which shows I had 2 needles one directly in one of my scars from arthroscopy and one just beside . It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be , just uncomfortable.
8th Saturday March
Me and mick went on a 20mile bike ride today! Who would of thought id be able to do that 14 weeks since my operation ?!?!
Bit of swelling but no pain.
March 14th Friday
Acupuncture again but this time in my big scar , really sensitive , sore , bit twingy but fine.
And today I also had cupping ........ I have 2 cups suctioned onto the front of my scar and one on my calve . Anj explained that it stretches all the layers of the skin , so try and soften my scars and scar tissue.
Im now finally driving too !! WAHAHAHOOOOO
