Im Tilly Rasmussen , Im 19 years of age.
I am training to be a professional dancer at Bodyworks Cambridge, and I am currently in my 2nd year at college.
18 months ago (april 2012) I stupidly went out in ridiculously high heels for a friends birthday , even though mum had said ‘ your going to fall over’ , one of my friends unfortunately fell and pulled me down with her. I sprained my right outta ankle badly, after getting a xray to make sure there was no breakage I was told it would heel with rest .I started to be able to walk on it again properly about 2 weeks after.
It took me a good 6 months before it was stable enough for me to NOT go over on my ankle in everyday walking ‘walking to the shops’.My ankle would regularly give way and was worse when walking on un even surfaces.
I had a funding audition at Bodyworks , prior to this I had lots of physio with my amazingly talent physio in St Albans, Anj Coi Bell, she has lots of experience with dancers as she worked with the Royal Ballet and 'Darcey Bussel'.
I managed to get through the audition and had my ankle strapped up.
My physio treated me with a mixture of massage, soft tissue work , acupuncture and ultra sound. I was given exercies too which I was to do weekly. My ankle seemed to stablise itself although I always knew it was never the same as it was before the accident.
I know most dancers have hypermobile feet – but I have always been told my dance teachers how hyper my feet actually are especially the right one.
I continued to dance on my ankle for a good 16-18months after the original injury.
I completed my 1st year with no major problems and it wasnt until the last term where it started aching in mornings and evenings . I felt it was very weak and couldn't sustain the long busy days which were expected of me at college . In a ballet lesson I went over it the same way I did the 1st time , again in a jazz lesson when jumping . A strong shooting pain went up my foot, ankle and leg . The pain instantly made me cry and was very upsetting . I spoke to mum telling her there was something not right . After speaking to numerous teachers from my college in Cambridge aswell as back home in Hertfordshire, I got a lot of confused faces when I told them I had no problem walking only dancing ...... this was soon explained to me my Dr Deol.
People found it hard to understand that I had no pain when walking but when I danced I was in a lot of pain.I have decided to write this blog on my own experience of getting Brostrom surgery as when I was told I was getting it I found it very hard to find any information of Dancers experience on the surgery with regards to pain and recovery , so I hope you find this informative and interesting.
